Weekly Wrap:
This week I have been continuing work on this painting. I’m thinking of naming it something like Printed or In Print. I like Printed Matter but that’s already been taken by this organization.
I have broken a palette knife and sliced my left palm open with another palette knife while working on this painting! I suppose I should ease up on the intensity of the paint mixing! I’m trying to get her ready to include in the Bennett Prize application. Everything is going to have to go very well for me to manage to succeed at this feat. I think it is possible but I don’t think the odds are in my favor. That’s okay. As of Tuesday—when I’m writing this while taking a break while my hand stops bleeding—she now has her outfit on! I just need to get all the rest of the parts show ready. This hand injury is a real bummer.
While on bummers, look what happened to my Art\Practice book. This book was ostensibly helping me form words to match what it is I do. It was in my backpack when a full 20 oz water bottle with leaky sport spout fully emptied itself and soaked all my things. Ah jeez! I haven’t decided if the universe is telling me this little book is not for me or if i should refocus my efforts here? The printed questions are for the most part in tact—it’s my answers that have been literally washed away. I will revisit the ideas here and whether they are worth my time and effort after this week, after I finish this painting.
Oh, and while on finished paintings… Last week? the week before? while I waited for Printed/InPrint’s underpainting to dry I finished this one. I am still trying to decide if I do a little color adjusting but I’m mostly happy with how it currently exists. Depicted here is a visit from my dear friend Kyung who lives across the country in NYC. It was early days (for me at least) in the world beginning to reopen during Covid. So here we are, outdoors, on my old apartment balcony with my pandemic, Victory container garden. Kyung is a super talented artist. See her work at Kyung Eun You or on IG @kyungeunyou
Also, I received my Hobonichi order! Yay!
It’s been an exhausting week. I’m looking forward to its conclusion while also wishing it was Monday and I had more days to work! Hope your week has gone well! And that your time has been well spent!
Cheers,
Jess

Theme: Grand Opening/Joy
Deadline: October 31, 2024
Best Friends Faith Zapata (Editorial Director) and Mack Price (Creative Director) are launching Superfan, a literary & arts magazine for creatives, by creatives. The inaugural issue has an open call for writing and art about joy. And who wouldn’t want to spend a little extra time with joy.
“We want to see happiness through your eyes—bring us your best and brightest pieces yet.”
I stumbled across this venture randomly—or algorithmically—and look forward to seeing what these two besties curate and create!
